How to update packages on Fedora?

Mustafa | March 27, 2008 | 1:30 pm

First of all you have to login as root, so open a terminal and excute the following command,
su -
Then you will have set up the proxy server if you have one, just open the /etc/bashrc configuration file with your favorite editor,
gedit /etc/bashrc
Add the following line to the end of the file,
export http_proxy=http://proxy_address:port
For sure you have to substitute your proxy IP and port instead of proxy_address and port respectively.
Now you have close the terminal window and open it again, you have to login as root one more time,
su -
To get the list of updates available,
yum check-updates
To update a certain package,
yum update package_name
To update all packages,
yum update

ENJOY!

How to open rar files in ubuntu ?

aboSamoor | | 9:39 am

Ok, this is pretty easy :)
just install the rar library :

sudo apt-get install rar

rar package supports multiple volume archives and damage protection. It can also create SFX-archives. There are versions which run on DOS, Windows (3.1x,95,NT), FreeBSD, BSDI.

to make a  new rar archive

rar a new.rar file1 file2

to extract a rar archive file

rar  e new.rar

or you can make archives or extract them, by clicking right on the archives and choose from the menu, as you are doing with the .tar.gz archives :)

Customize nano with highlighting and line numbers.

aboSamoor | March 21, 2008 | 6:34 pm

nano is terminal based editor, it’s installed by default with Ubuntu.
you can install by :
sudo apt-get install nano

nano is my best editor, i searched for other alternatives to get highlighting and numbering the lines, till i found that my little lovely editor can reveal his real nature with little customization :-D .

Highlighting

to enable this feature you have to edit nanorc file  in /etc.

sudo nano /etc/nanorc

uncomment the statements that look like this
## Python
#include "/usr/share/nano/python.nanorc"

to become :
## Python
include "/usr/share/nano/python.nanorc

by doing this you will enable the highligting feature for python. To get clear highligting you have to switch the background of your terminal to black, or you can change the theme of the highlighting by editing the .nanorc files in /usr/share/nano/

Lines numbers

you can activate this features by passing -c parameter at initiation, as follows :
nano -c /path/to/the/file

or after starting nano, by ctrl+c to turn on, and alt+c to turn off.

to go specific line number press alt+g, then enter the line number you want and 0 for the column number.

to learn more about nano, while running nano press  ctrl+g

You can do that by the following steps:

  1. while booting, Press ThinkVantage blue button
  2. press F1 to enter the BIOS utility
  3. choose config then press Enter
  4. go to Keyboard mouse section
  5. choose disable option for the touchpad

Enjoy typing without interrupts ;)

Generating your public key

aboSamoor | March 16, 2008 | 10:34 pm

When i tried to subscribe my feed to Ubuntu planet, i faced a bunch of steps to complete the process, you can find it here.

One of them was asking about my public ssh key on my launchpad account ?!!!, yes i have an account on launchpad, but i don’t have a public ssh key.

you can make one easily by the following commands

sudo apt-get install openssh-client openssh-server
echo "AllowedAuthentications           publickey" >> /etc/ssh/ sshd_config
ssh-keygen

after the last command you will get the same as follows:
Generating public/private rsa key pair.
Enter file in which to save the key (/media/sda8/phi/.ssh/id_rsa):
Enter passphrase (empty for no passphrase):
Enter same passphrase again:
Your identification has been saved in /media/sda8/phi/.ssh/id_rsa.
Your public key has been saved in /media/sda8/phi/.ssh/id_rsa.pub.
The key fingerprint is:##################################

to get the public key that you generated and copy it to the launchpad, just try

cat ~/YourHome/.ssh/id_rsa.pub/
